Rhone

The source of the Rhone lies high in the Swiss Alps, but for wine lovers it begins 20 miles south of Lyons and stretches some 125 miles south to Avignon. Here one can find everyday drinking wines and wines that will stand up to the world's finest - wines to "drink with joy" and those to "savor and remember."

The Rhone is usually thought of as a single wine region. However, nothing could be further from the truth. In comparing one end to the other, we find different grape varieties, terroir and weather conditions.

At the very least, the Rhone should be divided into two areas: a long narrow northern part from Vienne to Valence and a broad southern part just north of Avignon. To visualize the areas, think of a tennis racquet standing on its head
