Saint-Romain is a most picturesque village. Towering around the village like a huge ancient amphitheater are rugged cliffs that further add to the village's feeling of isolation. The best vineyards are located up over the cliffs, southeast of the village. Though both red and white wine is made, Chardonnay does best-- especially in ripe vintages. Though both Pinot and Chardonnay are grown in Saint-Romain,
it's the Chardonnay that does best. The whites have a fresh,
mineral character that combines well with the honeyed flavors
that ripe vintages bring. However, traditionally made Saint-
Romains can be "hard edged" when young and need 3 to 4 years
cellaring.
