About Us

Welcome to the Burgundy Wine Company. We want to make your wine experiences enjoyable and rewarding, whether you're purchasing a bottle for dinner or a gift, choosing that special occasion bottle or looking for wines to cellar for the years ahead. Our staff is dedicated to giving you personalized attention and the best possible advice on wines that suit your particular palate and needs.

We opened our doors in 1988 in a shoe box sized store in the West Village, catering to Burgundy collectors around the country. In September 2002, we moved to our new store at 143 West 26th Street, so we would have the space to invite you in - to visit, browse, taste and learn more about the wines we offer.

We know that finding a wine you're sure to like, regardless of its origins, is like navigating your way through a foreign country without a road map. French wines can be especially difficult since the labels often require some level of knowledge or expertise. But there are delights and treasures to be found on the wine route - on well traveled roads and in little known villages. If you're willing to explore, we would like to be your guide.

Our wines are hand selected for quality, typicity and taste. We don't buy or offer wines based on ratings or reviews. Ratings don't reflect the personality of a wine, and reviews don't tell the whole story. We prefer to do our own tasting and make our own decisions based on that experience, together with our knowledge of the vintage, the vineyards and the producers. Our selections reflect our taste, our expertise and our passion. We want to share that with you.

All burgundy is red right?
No, actually wines produced in Burgundy are both red and white. The red wines are made from Pinot Noir. The white wines are made from Chardonnay.
Chablis is the grape?
No, Chablis is the region. The grape varietal used to make Chablis is Chardonnay.
What do Burgundies taste like?
Big question! The whites range from flintly, crisp, mineral wines from Chablis to steely Puligny-Montrachets to lusicious, honeysuckle and toasted hazelnut Meursaults.

As we move south to the Macon, the wines gain richness and weight, but rarely resemble typical California Chardonnay. The reds range from silky, elegant Volnays to black fruit loaded, powerhouse Gevrey-Chambertins to red/black cherry, sexy Chambolle-Musignys.

What is the grape varietal(s) of Croze-Hermitage and St. Joseph?
Syrah
I thought the 1997 vintage was panned for Oregon wines? Why are you promoting them?
Because some vintages just need time to come around. The press needs a story. The story was '97 was a difficult vintage and were not drinking well at the start.

However, we have opened numerous bottles of '97 recently and enjoyed the integrated fruit. In fact the 1997 Thomas was hit at a recent tasting, over the several '99s.

Key terms on our wines.

Our Commitment to You
Since opening our doors in 1988 we have focused on providing the finest Burgundies, Rhones and the same grape varietals from California and Oregon. To ensure you receive only the finest wines, we run our business on "Five Commitments to Quailty."

1. QUALITY IN SELECTION
We visit each producer one to three times a year. If we purchase a wine, we have tasted it several times--usually in barrel and afer bottling. We represent no producer. We represent you.

2. QUALITY IN CHECKING SHIPMENTS
We taste and often reject wine shipments because they were not handled properly. We insist our shipments not be made during warmer months. A little-known fact is that the small trucks that pick up wine at the domaine and importer delivery trucks here in the United States are rarely air conditioned.

3. QUALITY IN STORING OUR WINES
We are fanatics on properly storing wine. All our wines, from Beaujolais to Musigny, are cellared in temperature controlled conditions. The cellars under our store get no warmer than 53 to 54 degrees.

4. QUALITY IN COMMUNICATING TO YOU
With rare exceptions (always noted), all tasting notes are our own. We don't rate wines, because tastes differ dramatically. Rather, we describe and contrast each wine with others. Why? So you can understand which wine best matches your tastes. For it's your taste that makes one wine a "95" and another "85."

5. QUALITY IN SHIPPING
We do not like to ship during the dead of winter and the heat of summer. Yes, we lose sales and our cellars get very crowded. But why bother with the above if a wine is ruined getting to you.
